The Gala Awards organizes the 5th edition of THE JACOB RIIS AWARD (named after the Danish-American photographer, 1849-1914), inviting photographers working in all mediums, styles and schools of thought. Challenging personal, emotional or political statements will be welcome. The Award is open worldwide to all professional and amateur photographers working with digital or traditional photography.


No digital manipulation will be accepted if it alters the visual chronicle.

Any type of photography is accepted, either Black & White or Color.

In this edition, only series composed of 3 to 10 images will be accepted. The series has to be a coherent body of work, and each image composing the series must have its own intrinsic value.

The theme of the Award is Editorial and Documentary.


By Editorial and Documentary we understand the form of photography used to chronicle everyday life images, to illustrate an article or to inform and educate. It can be simply said that editorial and documentary is the photography that supports the printed word, although it can be used as standalone, while we distinguish it from corporate, advertising, or fine art photography.


This awards qualify to be selected to participate in the 5th edition of the Biennial of Fine Art and Documentary Photography which will be held as Prague Foto Biennale to be held in Prague in September-October, 2018.

Eligibility: Open to all photographers 18 years old or older, professional and amateur, from any country of the world.

Andrea Star Reese.
Andrea Star Reese is a VISURA photojournalist/documentary photographer based in New York, Seattle, and Jakarta, which recently won the 9th Julia Margaret Cameron Award, best portfolio in Human Rights in the Berlin Foto Biennale, and the Deeper Perspective Award of IPA.
Her potftolio Urban Cave was a Visa D'Or at Visa Pour L'Image in Perpignan, 2010. Andrea also received the 2014 David Pike Award for Excellence in Journalism and Best Social Documentary at the 2009 New York Festival (2009). Among other media, Andrea has published in CNN, The Guardian, Time, Huffington Post, Le Monde, and Paris Match.


Awards:

One Photographer will be Recipient of the Jacob Riis Award Award, and will be invited to exhibit and attend the 5th edition of the Biennial of Fine Art and Documentary Photography to be held in Prague* in September-October, 2018. The Gala Awards will pay her round trip couch ticket to Prague*, and $1,000 for lodging expenses. Awardee's exhibition expenses will be borne by The Gala Awards.


*: The organizer of the Award reserves the right to change the city of the Biennial in case of extraordinary circumstances. If Prague is changed by another city, the city of the venue will be always within Europe.


Two Runner Ups Photographers will receive a prize of $300, and will be automatically selected to exhibit at the 5th edition of the Biennial of Fine Art and Documentary Photography.

Series will be initially pre-selected in a short list based on the visual story and quality of the images. Artists shortlisted will be asked, before the final selection, to submit an artist statement or synopsis, which may include more complete tiles or captions.

March 2, 2017 (results will be emailed to all participants by email.)

Submissions Fees:
Early Bird Discount (until December 14, 2016 at 11.59pm PT): 30% discount:
Series: $42; each additional series $21.

After December 14 and until Final Deadline:
Series: $60 for one series (composed of 3 to 10 images), and $ 30 for each additional series.

There is no limitation regarding the total of Series to be submitted.

Participant artists warrant that they are able to send high resolution files (300 dpi) for printing if requested.

Prepare your images as required before beginning the submission process. 
Submissions should be done using the Entry and Registration Form.

Submitted digital image files must meet the following specifications:

- 8 bit JPEG files
- The maximum largest dimension should be 1200 pixels (width or height) and no less than 800 pixels
- Resolution of 72 dpi
- JPG quality of 7 or 8 (no tiff please, only jpg are accepted)

Label each file with your first name and last name, space, underscore, space, image title. Use only alpha-numeric characters (do not use: .:’”/?}{()[ ]+-=*&^ %$#@! and no accents)

Please follow this type of labeling; wrong file labels without name and title won't be able to be uploaded in the data base.
EXAMPLE OF FILE LABEL OR FILE NAME:
You should have a title of the series, and you will have to use that title in the file. For instance, if you name the series “My Neighbors”, you may put a different name of each image (i.e. John, Susan, Lucy, Grandma.) In that case you files names will be:

Jane Smith _ My Neighbors _ Susan.jpg
Jane Smith _ My Neighbors _ Lucy.jpg
Jane Smith _ My Neighbors _ Grandma.jpg

If the images have no name, then write Untitled 1, 2, 3, 4… instead of the image name.

All participants of the THE GALA AWARDS (TGA) competitions warrant that they own the work submitted and they have exclusive copyright. By submitting to this award entrants agree with these rules and conditions of entry.
TGA recognizes that the authors retain full ownership of the image copyright.

USAGE:

Participants warrant that their photographs may be reproduced for the purpose of marketing and promoting the Biennial and TGA contests, in catalogues, posters, postcards, publications, and on the Internet. Such use is granted for not more than two years after the announcement of the awards, and without payment to the photographer or featured models. Photographers will receive photo credits with each use, and will allow TGA to sub-license their photographs to the press for reproduction in connection with the contest and TGA exhibitions.

TGA will treat participant’s data confidential, and their email addresses or other personal data will only be used to contact the contestants, and will not be transmitted to third parties without explicit consent.

TGA has the right to reject and remove any entry that contains defamatory, obscene, or pornographic content, or that may be considered a criminal offence or violate any law.
