The 2nd Edition of the Charles Dodgson Black & White Award                                                         ENTER

WPGA invites professional and non professional photographers worldwide, working in all mediums, styles and schools of thought to submit single images and series to this second edition of the B&W Charles Dodgson Award*. Traditional, contemporary, avant-garde, creative and experimental works that include old and new processes, mixed techniques, and challenging personal, emotional or political statements will be welcome. Digital or traditional photography or combinations of both are accepted.

Images can be Black & White or toned images, such as sepia, selenium or even any type of digital toning.

*Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (1832-1898), better known by the pseudonym Lewis Carroll, was an English photographer, author, mathematician, logician and Anglican deacon. His most famous writings are Alice's Adventures in
Wonderland and its sequel Through the Looking-Glass. Approximately 60% of his original, awesome and controversial photographic portfolio is now missing.


This awards qualify to be selected to participate in the 5th edition of the Biennial of Fine Art and Documentary Photography which will be held as Prague Foto Biennale to be held in Prague in September-October, 2018.

Eligibility:

Open to all photographers 18 years old or older, professional and amateur, from any country of the world.

Juror:
Chris Walker.
Chris is a talented B&W artist and journalist with deep concerns for social anthropology and our ever-changing environment.
He has photographed for clients ranging from The Associated Press and The New York Times to Scientific American, Inc. and Camping Life magazine, where he was the photography columnist for five years. In 1995, the Ernst Haas Awards named him to their annual list of the world’s top 100 emerging photographers. Since receiving his MFA at Souther Illinois University, he’s taught part and full time for eight different colleges and universities. In conjunction with his commitment to education, Walker works as a long-term documentarian and is currently gearing up for the 28th season of his Six Nights a Year project. He was an exhibitor in the recent Berlin Foto Biennale (4th edition of the Biennial of Fine Art and Documentary Photography).  His website is on The New York Times’ “Most Provocative Websites” list, and in the past few years he’s been highlighted in photography textbooks such as Light and Lens: Photography in the Digital Age (Hirsch); Artificial Lighting for Photography: Studio and Location, Film and Digital (McKenzie and Overturf); and he edited, illustrated, and contributed copy to a chapter in Multimedia Foundations: Core Concepts for Digital Design (Costello and Youngblood). 


Awards:

One Photographer will be Recipient of the Charles Dodgson B&W Award, and will be invited to exhibit and attend the 5th edition of the Biennial of Fine Art and Documentary Photography to be held in Prague in September-October, 2018. Her exhibition expenses will be borne by The Gala Awards, plus a cash award of $1,000.

Two Runner Ups Photographers will receive a prize of $300, and will be automatically selected to exhibit at the 5th edition of the Biennial of Fine Art and Documentary Photography.

Each category winner will receive a cash award of $100.

Submissions Fees:
Early Bird Discount (until December 14, 2016 at 11.59pm PT): 30% discount:
Single Image: $32 for up to 3 single images; each additional image $7.
Series (3 to 5 images): $42; each additional series $21.


After December 14 and until Final Deadline:

SINGLE IMAGE: $45 for up to 3 single images, and $10 for each additional image.
SERIES: $60 for one series (composed of 3 to 5 images), and $ 30 for each additional series.

There is no limitation regarding the total of Single Images and Series to be submitted. Single images or Series can be submitted to more than one category buy count as separate entries. Single images and Series will be juried together, and individual images of a series can be isolated from the series for the selection process, although a series has to be a coherent body of work.

Participant artists warrant that they are able to send high resolution files (300 dpi) for printing if requested.

Prepare your images as required before beginning the submission process. 
Submissions should be done using the Entry and Registration Form.

Submitted digital image files must meet the following specifications:

- 8 bit JPEG files
- The maximum largest dimension should be 1200 pixels (width or height) and no less than 800 pixels
- Resolution of 72 dpi
- JPG quality of 7 or 8 (no tiff please, only jpg are accepted)

Label each file with your first name and last name, space, underscore, space, image title. Use only alpha-numeric characters (do not use: .:’”/?}{()[ ]+-=*&^ %$#@! and no accents)

Please follow this type of labeling; wrong file labels without name and title won't be able to be uploaded in the data base.
EXAMPLE OF FILE LABEL OR FILE NAME:
For an artist called Jane Smith submitting a work titled Portrait of my Mother, the file name will be:
Jane Smith _ Portrait of my Mother.jpg

If you are sending a series, you should name the series, and you will have to use that name in the file. For instance, if you name the series “My Neighbors”, you may put a different name of each image (i.e. John, Susan, Lucy, Grandma.) In that case you files names will be:

Jane Smith _ My Neighbors _ John.jpg
Jane Smith _ My Neighbors _ Susan.jpg
Jane Smith _ My Neighbors _ Lucy.jpg
Jane Smith _ My Neighbors _ Grandma.jpg

If the series has no name, then instead of the name of the series just write Series Untitled 1, Series Untitled 2 (if submitting more then one, etc.)

If the images have no name, then write Untitled 1, 2, 3, 4… instead of the image name.

All participants of the THE GALA AWARDS (TGA) competitions warrant that they own the work submitted and they have exclusive copyright. By submitting to this award entrants agree with these rules and conditions of entry.
TGA recognizes that the authors retain full ownership of the image copyright.

USAGE:

Participants warrant that their photographs may be reproduced for the purpose of marketing and promoting the Biennial and TGA contests, in catalogues, posters, postcards, publications, and on the Internet. Such use is granted for not more than two years after the announcement of the awards, and without payment to the photographer or featured models. Photographers will receive photo credits with each use, and will allow TGA to sub-license their photographs to the press for reproduction in connection with the contest and TGA exhibitions.

TGA will treat participant’s data confidential, and their email addresses or other personal data will only be used to contact the contestants, and will not be transmitted to third parties without explicit consent.

TGA has the right to reject and remove any entry that contains defamatory, obscene, or pornographic content, or that may be considered a criminal offence or violate any law.
